Kay Harris

Kay Harris passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, May 2nd, 2025 in Walkerton. Kay was the much-loved wife and best friend of Mike Tousignant and the late Bob Ebel (2015). Cherished mother of Sandra (Peter) Standish of Woodstock, the late Tanya (2024) (Mike) Merkley of Kitchener and step-daughter Shelva (Steve) Ireland of Guelph. Cherished Grandma of Travis Merkley, Brandon (Cassie) Standish, Jenna (Brandon) Empey, Evan (Halie) Standish, and Ali & Leah Ireland. Proud Great-Grandma of Lennon, Penelope, Beckham, Sophie, Jovie and Hayes. Predeceased by her siblings Glen (Verlaine), Jack (Jean), and Clare (Gladys) of Belgrave, Norma (Ken) of Glencoe, and Donna (Ken) of Clinton. Fondly remembered by step-son Shane (Kelly), Brian (Morgan) & step-grandchildren Hannah, Aubrey & Jaxon Tousignant and brother-in-law Ron (Deanna) Tousignant. Sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and her loyal companion fur baby Fritz.

Born in Wingham General Hospital to William & Hazel Van Camp (née Taylor), Kay was the youngest of six children. She often reminisced about growing up on the farm and being her father’s side kick, playing with her dogs, and the loving attention she received from her older siblings. Her family and the family she built has always been very important and a source of pride for her.

Throughout her life Kay worked at various jobs, but the one she loved the most was working for the LCBO in Teeswater, Mildmay & Hanover. Kay had a lifelong love of learning and could often be found with her nose in a book or challenging herself by watching Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune. She enjoyed a good board game challenge – especially if she won! She had great memories of her travels and loved to set off on adventures to see new places. She had a passion for wanting to right the wrongs in the world and often wrote excellent persuasive articles and thoughtful poems to express her feelings and opinions about topics that intrigued or concerned her (some of which were published). Kay had quite a sense of humour often saying she wants “I told you I was sick!” on her tombstone. In her younger days she loved going out dancing and socializing with friends. Kay recognized and contributed generously to needs of others in the communities where she has resided.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Antoniadis, Pellow’s Pharmacy and friend Elaine Mauer for their compassionate support and care during these past months.

Kay’s life will be celebrated privately by immediate family members. She wished to encourage other family members & friends to say a prayer, sing a song, think of a fond shared experience, &/or raise a glass to honour her memory. Interment will be at Brandon Cemetery, Belgrave alongside her parents. Kay will be missed, but her kind, good-hearted legacy will live on in those who knew her.

If desired, donations to Saugeen Hospice, Walkerton & District Food Bank or War Amps Canada would be appreciated as an expression of sympathy.
