John Joseph Murphy, of Hanover, passed away at Hanover and District Hospital, on Sunday, October 13, 2024. He was in his 96th year, and was born in Proton Township (Southgate), son of the late Joseph and Alice (nee Rice) Murphy.
John married Rosemary Scoles on August 15th, 1953 at St. Peter’s Church in Ayton and celebrated their love and devotion throughout 70 years of marriage. Family, farming and neighbors was the center of the life they shared together. John and Rosemary farmed in Normanby Township for 42 years. Prior to moving to Hanover in 2012, they were an active part of the community in Ayton. John loved his family and was so proud of his 6 children and 12 grandchildren. John was an avid farmer and gardener. He delighted in yielding bountiful crops and a healthy herd of cattle. In his later years, John enjoyed family gatherings, card games, and outings in the community. John was known for his kind and humble demeanour and touched the hearts of all that knew him.
John was a graduate of Toronto Normal School and Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. He taught school in Normanby Township, Preston, Hanover, Walkerton, and Mildmay. He took pride in his many years in education and students fondly remember having Mr. Murphy as their teacher.
Survived by sons Michael (Ursula) Murphy of Saugeen Shores and Jim (Joanne) Murphy of Walkerton, and daughters Mary Lou (Gord) Archer of Orangeville, Helen (Keith) Elliott of Newmarket and Kathy (David) Ermel of Hanover. Adored by grandchildren Katie, Siobhan, Kevin, Reaghen (Dave), Alison, Evan, Emily, Madison, Liam, Sean, Makenzie and Kyle. Fondly remembered by brother Pat (Doreen) of Orangeville. Predeceased by his beloved wife Rosemary, his son Daniel Murphy (Sonia), parents Joseph and Alice, and brothers Vincent (Louise), Tom (Elaine), Louis (Helen).
Family and friends are invited to a visitation held at Holy Family Church, Hanover on Saturday, October 19th, 2024 from 9:45-10:45 am, Eulogy will commence at 10:50 am, and Funeral Mass officiated by Father Romalito Guillen at 11:00 am. A short reception will be held at the back of the church directly following the mass. Internment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Ayton at 1:30 pm.
Memorial donations to the Hanover and District Hospital, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ayton, or Holy Family Parish in Hanover, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
