James A. “Jim” Currie, a long-time resident of Wingham, passed away peacefully in Clinton on Monday March 10, 2025, at the age of 93.
Jim is predeceased by his beloved wife Audrey (Henry) Currie with whom he shared sixty-two years of marriage. He is the cherished Father of Ansley Currie of Colborne, Kemp Currie & Linda Ogren of Campbell River, B.C., and Laird Currie of Wingham; and dear Grandfather of Madison and Angela Currie of Wingham.
Born and raised in Wingham by his late parents Robert A. & Mabel (Kemp) Currie, Jim is predeceased by his siblings and their spouses: Frances Currie de Hedderich (Henrique Hedderich), Virginia Northcott (Stan) and R. John Currie (Ruth). He is also predeceased by his in-laws: Donna (Henry) Hall (Dr James S.) and Hal Henry. Jim is survived by Hal Henry’s spouse Marion Middlebrook.
Blessed an entrepreneurial spirit, Jim had many talents. He devoted much of his spare time to the Town of Wingham, administratively as a Town Counsellor, and Police Commissioner; creatively as a member of the Towne Players (Little Theatre); and enterprisingly through driving renovations to the old theatre and introducing Wingham Heritage Theatre concert activities in the 1990’s. He also actively engaged in creating the Wingham Museum, Cruikshank Park, the original Alice Munro Garden, and the New (renamed Alice Munro) Library and the move to its current location, for which he was recognized as Wingham’s 1987 Citizen of the Year.
He loved music, singing Barbershop Quartet in his 30’s (Owen Sound) and his 70’s (Goderich), creative cooking of international cuisines, collecting antiques, sailing, travelling, and dancing with our Mother.
While we will be honouring our Father’s wishes for no formal ceremonies, we would certainly appreciate your sharing of any of your personal memories of him with us. A visitation and time to honour and celebrate him will be held at a future date following his interment at Wingham Cemetery.
As expressions of condolence, memorial donations to the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation would be great appreciated.
