George Duncan Spence of Mildmay passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital, in his 77th year. He will be dearly missed by his wife Barbara Spence (nee Reid), children Kimberley (Matthew) Ahrens, Kayley, Chad (Meredythe), his grandchildren, David, Annika, Spencer, Linden, Aislyn, Danica, Finn, Logan, Tyrese, and many more family members and friends.
Originally from Windsor, Nova Scotia, George’s family were heavily involved in agriculture and forestry. George was accepted to the Nova Scotia Agriculture College in 1964, affiliated with McGill University where he completed his last two years of his degree. While at McGill, in addition to a strong academic career and playing varsity basketball, he met Barbara, who was attending Macdonald College for teacher’s college. George and Barbara married in 1967 in Chateauguay and spent their first year together in the married quarters at McGill. Immediately after graduating, George was hired by Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and had a successful and fulfilling 32-year career with the organization. After living in Barrie, Kingston, Toronto and eventually in London, George completed his MBA from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He accepted his first posting in Walkerton with FCC in 1973. In 1975, George and Barbara made their way to Carrick Township where they purchased a farm in Mildmay, Ontario.
George (also referred to as GD, Popsie or Porgie), was an avid outdoorsman. After a long day at work, he came home to dabble on his hobby farm. This Included taking care of his cattle, gardening, bees, apple orchards, and even a sugar bush. He was also involved in many community programs, including 4H Leadership, Mildmay Agriculture Society, South Bruce Tree Committee, Kinsmen, and the United Church.
George was a kind, mild mannered and gentle giant. A good man who will be missed by everyone who knew him.
George was predeceased by his son Todd, brother Bruce, and his parents Norman and Rae (nee Vaughn) Spence.
Friends and relatives are invited for casual visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2022, at St. Paul’s United Church, Walkerton. Officiated by Pastor Cathy Paul and Pastor Chuck Beaton.
Interment in Mildmay United Cemetery.
