Dr. George Albert (Bert) Mitchell Dr. George Albert (Bert) Mitchell passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 7, 2025. He is survived by his wife Linda Prowten, whom he married in 2000, and his sons David (Terry) and Alan (Erin), grandchildren Elizabeth, Harrison and Ada Mitchell as well as brother Howard (Betty), brothers-in-law Jim and Owen Townsend, cousins, nieces, nephews and step-children David Prowten and Heather Postma.
He was predeceased by his first wife Mary Townsend in 1998, their daughter Elizabeth (1968) brother Earl (2023) and sister-in-law Eleanor Calder (2022).
Born on a farm in Canada, raised by Bennett and Alba, he began his education in a one-room schoolhouse followed by Listowel District High School, Ontario Agricultural College, Ontario Veterinary College, and a lifetime of continuing education. The farm was an enduring source of renewal for Bert and he spoke often of the importance of returning to his roots.
For 35 years, Bert served as a veterinarian dedicated to research and public health across both private and public sectors. In the 24 years following his retirement from government service, he remained an active and passionate leader in civic, professional, faith, and community organizations.
The funeral service will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Please join the family for a reception and further celebration of Bert’s life at Parkview Gardens (565 Elizabeth St. E., Listowel) following the funeral service. Inurnment to follow in Molesworth Cemetery.
