Dr. Alton MacKay

Dr. Alton Lewis MacKay of Listowel passed away surrounded by his family, on Monday, June 24, 2024, in his 81st year.

Husband of Shirley (Tompkins) MacKay for nearly 59 years.

Father of Alan & Shelly MacKay of Listowel, and Lesley & Steve Fodor of Shedden.

Grandfather of Adam MacKay, Emily MacKay, Steven Fodor, and Brady Fodor.

Brother of Muriel Wolfs of Moncton, NB, and uncle of Warren Wolfs of Vancouver, B.C.  Brother-in-law of Arline & Edwin Rideout, and Clinton & Nora Tompkins, all of Alberta.

Predeceased by his parents Archie & Viola (Milbury) MacKay.

Alton was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick on March 22, 1944.  He graduated from Nova Scotia Agricultural College (Dalhousie University) and Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), and upon graduation he joined Listowel Veterinary Clinic.  Alton practiced veterinary medicine for 35 years focusing on dairy herd health and embryo transfer.  He was one of the founding members of Veterinary Purchasing Co. Ltd.

Always a farmer at heart, Cedar Patch Acres was a renowned breeder of full french Limousine Cattle, and was awarded the Canadian Association Award of Distinction in 2007.  The cattle were his pride and joy winning numerous show awards and were marketed live and through embryos throughout the world.

A private family service will be held, with interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Memorial donations to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated, and may be made through the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel.
