Doreen was born in Wallace Township on June 6, 1936. She finished high school and graduated from Wilfrid Laurier with a BA and began teaching when she was only 19. She taught at multiple schools including LDSS, Wallace Public and Mitchell.
After she married Donald Hemsworth they settled on a farm on the 4th of Wallace where they raised their family and many pigs and chickens. She lost her husband in 1974 (hunting accident) but remained on the farm until the late 1980’s when she moved into Listowel.
In addition to teaching, she was also the assistant clerk for Wallace Township and the treasurer for the Listowel Legion Branch 259 for many years.
Doreen coached baseball and was a very dedicated church member. She was a highly engaged legion member and held every office in the branch (including being the first women president) and the Women’s Auxiliary. She was very well-liked and respected in the community and loved greatly by her family. She will be sorely missed.
