Bev Smith

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Beverley Morton Smith of Elk Lake, and formerly of Listowel, on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in his 76th year.

Beloved husband of Barbara (Ruddy) Smith for 48 years.  Proud father of Bryan Smith & wife Frances, and Jennifer Smith, and grandfather of Jack.

Survived also by his brother Gerry Smith & wife Shirley of Molesworth, sister Dayle Uraets & husband Bill of Grimsby, and by his nieces and nephews who thought their uncle Bev was pretty special.

Predeceased by his parents Dave & Pearl (Morton) Smith of R.R.1, Listowel, and by his parents-in-law Jack & Jean Ruddy of Elk Lake.

Bev was raised in Wallace Township on a farm just outside of Listowel.  He grew up being the middle child, with an older sister and a younger brother.  Bev received his education at Molesworth Public School and Listowel District High School and gained his work ethic from being raised a farm.  This he used all through his life.

After graduating from Listowel High School, Bev attended Forestry School in Dorset, Ontario.  Upon graduation, he attained a position with M.N.R. at Skead in the Sudbury District and proceeded onto his career at Elk Lake as a Forestry Technician.

There he scaled lumber, assessing Forestry cuts and organizing reforestation planting crews.  Bev was a firefighter foreman, sometimes leading up to 200 firefighters on a large fire.

His hobbies included curling and fishing.  He was such an avid fisherman and knew the area so well that upon retirement, he would work as a guide for hunting and fishing lodges.

A Celebration of Bev’s life will be held at the Elk Lake Legion on August 31st, 2024.
