On Tuesday, March 31st, 2026, Bert Askes of Bluevale passed away unexpectedly at the age of 74.
Loving husband of Jenny Askes (née De Ruiter).
Devoted dad of his four daughters; Marie and Matthew Shevchuk, Kathryn Askes and Symon Sloat, Elizabeth and Brad Wagar and Carolyn and Russell Kyle.
Adored grandpa of Eva and Luke Shevchuk and Ellie, Rachel and Daniel Wagar.
Cherished brother of Dick and Dixie Askes, Jennie and Spike Bakker, Dianne and Jan Polley, John and Marlene Askes and Martin and Lorna Askes, and brother-in-law of Ruby Askes, Don Bakelaar, Henry De Ruiter, Linda Graham, Rob and Tuyen De Ruiter, Martin and Eileen De Ruiter, Richard and Kathy De Ruiter, Susan De Ruiter, David De Ruiter, and Tena and Theo Boven.
Bert will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and large extended family.
Predeceased by parents John and Bontje (Kemper) Askes, brother Henry Askes, sister Bonnie Bakelaar, parents-in-law Maarten and Sjieuwke De Ruiter and brother-in-law Mel Graham.
Bert loved to sing, whistle and hum. He was an active member in his men’s and church choir. He was a valued member of the Wingham Lions Club for decades, acting as their President for the past year. He liked to keep his mind and body active, always tackling a new project, either renovating something in the house or working on cars in his shop. He loved the outdoors, to sit and watch nature. He loved his family fiercely.
Visitation was held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Listowel on Wednesday, April 8th from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Memorial service was held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, April 9th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception that followed. The funeral service was live-streamed and a link is available on our website.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides or Lions Eyes Right would be appreciated.
