BRUCE COUNTY – The Bruce County Public Library is now closer than ever to bringing their bookmobile project to Bruce County residents, thanks to a generous donation of $50,000 from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO).
The NWMO is a not-for-profit organization responsible for designing and implementing Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of nuclear fuel, and an avid supporter of the Bruce County Public Library. In the fall of 2020, the NWMO donated the funds required to purchase one of the library’s new 3D printers.
Library board chair Luke Charbonneau expressed his appreciation, saying, “The board is extremely grateful for this generous donation from the NWMO. With the addition of these funds, we are close to achieving our goal of buying a bookmobile for the Bruce County Public Library. It is an exciting opportunity to broaden access to library programs, and we thank NWMO for helping to make it possible.”
The bookmobile project will bring books to where the people are. Seniors’ homes like Trillium Court in Kincardine, daycares, arenas, and sports fields are only a few of the locations the bookmobile could visit. Needs-based stops will reach underserved people, such as newcomers or those with language or literacy barriers. The bookmobile can also present programming at community events, festivals, and other outdoor public gatherings.
“It is our pleasure to support this important regional initiative that will have long-lasting benefits,” said Tareq Al-Zabet, NWMO director of site selection – South Bruce. “Libraries continue to play a critical role in the community, and we thank the Bruce County Public Library for working tirelessly to connect residents and for improving accessibility of literacy services throughout the county.”
Warden Janice Jackson said she recognizes how this donation will help all Bruce County residents. “After another challenging year of branch closures and interrupted services, we are excited to be this much closer to launching the bookmobile and being able to safely bring services to underserved communities in Bruce County. We wouldn’t be able to achieve this without the generosity of the NWMO. Thank you.”
Toronto Public Library, which has several bookmobiles throughout the city, describes the experiences as “magical.” Bruce County Public Library is excited to bring that magic to local residents.
