On April 19, the New Millennium Quilters Guild (NMQG) met in person, the second time since the start of the pandemic. Members were once again able to browse through the many books available to borrow from the guild’s library.
Many members participated in the popular “Show and Share” portion of the meeting. The outreach committee also displayed several quilts that will eventually be distributed to the community.
The special interest groups Stashbusters, Historical, Wool Appliqué and Modern Quilting continue to meet through Zoom and meetings are well attended.
The NMQG is once again presenting a quilt show called “Making Memories,” highlighting the many talents of the guild members.
The NMQG was founded in 2000 and consists of women from area communities including Hanover, Walkerton, Elmwood, Neustadt, Mildmay, Chesley, Port Elgin and Kincardine, to name a few. Today, the membership includes ladies from places throughout Canada.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, monthly meetings have been held through the Zoom platform. The decision to proceed with the quilt show presented organizers with many challenges.
The “Making Memories” quilt show will be held at the Mildmay-Carrick Recreation Complex on Friday, May 27 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 28, from 10 a.m. -4 p.m. Admission is $10 (cash only).
Featured at the show will be a variety of beautiful bed quilts, lap and baby quilts, wall hangings, mystery quilts, quilted apparel and accessories, antique quilts, vendors and more. Visitors can choose their favourite as a “Viewers Choice.”
Raffle tickets will be sold on a beautiful bed quilt and co-ordinating table topper made by guild members. Ticket sales have been brisk. The raffle quilt pattern “Village” is a reminder of how members were isolated at home during the pandemic while they made these lovely house blocks for this quilt.
Other special attractions include guest speaker Sharon Fisher of “Gardening Mum Quilts.” Sharon is a well-known long arm quilter, and wool appliqué expert, who uses both traditional and modern embellishments.
The “Quilts of Valour” display features quilts that will be donated to veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Community support will highlight the community outreach program. Quilts are made by guild members and donated to various causes and charitable organizations, to victims of fire, to those who are ill, in recovery or undergoing treatments.
There will be Christmas and seasonal items. Also featured will be a special “Bed Turning“ which will showcase unique as well as antique quilts, each with a special story to tell.
Proceeds from the “Making Memories” quilt show will be used for future outreach projects, guest speakers and quilting courses for guild members.
Mildmay-Carrick Recreation Complex provides free parking, is an air-conditioned facility and is very accessible. COVID protocols will be in place. For more information contact newmillenniumquiltersguild@gmail.com.
