Market Garden Park construction set to begin next week, finish by July

WALKERTON – Construction of the Market Garden Park in downtown Walkerton is set to begin next week, with an anticipated opening date of July 2023.

Currently an empty lot at 312 Durham St. between Walker’s Landing and EXP Realty, the site will become an outdoor community hub with seating, tables, a water feature, paths, landscaping, a small stage, and plaques celebrating the heritage of the site and contributors to the project. Donations are still being accepted.

“We are very excited to see the next stage of this project taking shape, and are looking forward to holding a grand opening this summer,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “It will be a chance to thank our many donors and contributors, including the Wong family, who made the land purchase possible, and to thank our businesses and residents for being patient as the project has unfolded.”

Work is set to begin the week of April 3, weather permitting. Safety fencing will be erected, and no parking will be permitted at the back of the lot. The contractor has secured all materials and sub-trades, sourcing locally where possible. RMP Welding and Weber Electric are two other companies involved.

The park was originally to open in 2022, but labour and supply shortages, and a cost estimate that far surpassed the anticipated budget for the project, delayed construction. The total project is budgeted at $450,000 with costs expected to be less. To date, $200,000 has been raised through private and corporate donations from the community, and provincial and federal grants.

Further contributions are welcomed, and will be acknowledged on a donor plaque in the Market Garden if received before the end of May. If you’re a business, group or individual wishing to contribute, email ppeirol@brockton.ca  or visit www.brockton.ca/marketgarden for more information.

A committee was formed to oversee the Market Garden project, and the Municipality of Brockton is grateful to all who contributed their time, ideas and enthusiasm to this effort.

“Brockton staff and council are committed to ensuring that the Market Garden park opens this summer. Monies have been allocated from the reserve fund and long-term debt to support its completion, however additional contributions from the community and businesses are most welcome to help offset the cost and develop this local community asset. The Market Garden will draw community members and visitors to our beautiful downtown Walkerton,” said Brockton CAO Sonya Watson.
