Dear Editor:
I wanted to comment on your article, “Trump transgressions ignored”, in the Nov. 14 issue of the Wingham Advance Times.
It strikes me as rather ironic that your article was positioned next to an article in which the reader is urged to seriously consider the source from which he or she derives information used to make voting decisions. So many of the ideas put forth of who President Donald Trump is and what he has allegedly done are not things backed up by reliable sources. The only source, for example, behind the “suckers and losers” claim is the hearsay of one disgruntled former appointee – there is not one shred of proof that it’s true. It’s nothing more than gossip. Any claim that can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without a second thought. “Trust me, bro” has never been a reputable source of information. The main sources for all the allegations of wrongdoing while in office come from politicians who have hated him since before his first term, and the Democrat-supporting media. Those who see him as an enemy want so badly for him to be worthy of their hatred, but it’s been years now and there have been plenty of investigations, and they still can’t make any of these charges stick. Where’s the proof? So far they appear to be lies, not truths. The sources of these allegations are not reliable. Why should any of us take them seriously?
These same sources are now telling us that he will throw his political enemies in jail – an ironic accusation, considering the Dems just spent four years weaponizing the judicial system in an attempt to throw their political enemy in jail – that women will now become second-class citizens, that LGBT folks will be jailed, that he will be a warmonger, on and on and on. None of that happened the first time around. Why should we believe it’ll happen this time? It’s just more allegations being made without a shred of proof to back them up. Far from being unfettered from typical political restraints, his plans for his second term dovetail beautifully with the Constitution and the writings of the Founding Fathers. “America First” is what drove that little handful of patriots to stand up to the might of the British Empire and stand up for what they knew their nation could be. “America First” is what turned the US into a global superpower.
Every country should be so lucky as to have a leader whose primary concern is his own country, his own people, their best interests, their economy. When did we decide that patriotism is bad? If we were talking about the leader of Somalia, or Thailand, or Chile, would we even bat an eye? Or is it only leaders of wealthy western nations that don’t get to put their country first? It’s honestly absurd to me. President Trump’s first obligation is America. He owes his people far more than he owes the rest of the world. But even in this, nobody can seriously claim that he’s a danger to the rest of the world. His track record of foreign relations speaks for itself. What war did he start? What international conflict did he escalate? He hasn’t even been sworn in yet and already he has met with Zelenskyy to discuss ending the conflict in the Ukraine as soon as possible. Contrast that with this week’s escalation of the situation, fuelled entirely by the Biden administration’s decision to pour gasoline on the fire. We are on the brink of World War III, and all of that happened under the watchful eye of the current administration, not during Trump’s first term. Global peace and stability, indeed.
I wish we had a leader who put Canada first and who invested in our economy rather than further increasing our national debt. I wish we had a leader who protected and enshrined our freedom of speech instead of curtailing it. I wish we had a leader who stood up for all Canadians, regardless of our beliefs, instead of demonizing and punishing those of us who don’t share his values and opinions. I wish we had rights that were recognized as being bestowed upon us by God, rather than rights that the government giveth and the government can taketh away.
Maybe when Trump is done making America great again, he can come here and make Canada free again. The same policies that American voters rejected two weeks ago are the reason why Canada is in such dire straits. We need someone who can stand up for our history and our heritage and proudly say “Canada first!”
So while many Canadians shake their heads in dismay at the results of this election, I for one am delighted for Americans. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. I think these next four years can be the beginning of a new era for our neighbours to the south. Maybe it’ll rub off on us.
