NWMO Request for feedback on DGR siting process does not make sense

Dear Editor:

It may come as a surprise for you that the Nuclear Waste Management Organization starts another new process for another nuke dump? This will be a multi-year process to independently confirm its safety before the project can go ahead. South Bruce wants to provide feedback, citing the experience of municipal staff. “How much will this cost our municipality in staff time?” one councilor asked. Our pools must be closed on Sundays, no flowers on the light posts in Teeswater, not even when we celebrated our 150th birthday. No money. NWMO was (and is) in our municipal office and a past NWMO- paid person was hired for the recreation department. You must wonder what is the intention to have two people running the recreation department in a small township? This can be a nice cover for hitting the ground running if or when South Bruce puts their hand up for the second nuclear waste dump.

The feedback does not make sense. NWMO knows exactly what was going on in our municipality inside the office and in the community. NWMO was leading the whole process and council was only their puppet, promoting and marketing of the nuke dump to the residents. What is the hidden agenda for this feedback?

NWMO learned a lot about the process in South Bruce and so did the DGR opposition. We discovered a lot of inconsistencies and questionable practices and misinformation about NWMO propaganda material and how the CLC committee chair was put in place after the CLC elections and money given to the Business Association after delegation to council and the chair said that money came from NWMO, No, I am kidding it was from memberships. That was a false answer. Why not being honest?

What do you have to hide? Why not say the Business Association got money from the municipality and it strongly raises the question: Was it from NWMO? That famous well-being fund? Bribing the community.

The NWMO requested to form a business association when South Bruce put their hand up for the dump to promote and convince the residents that the dump is a good idea. Also there was the idea put forward that council and the business association vote on the nuclear waste dump proposal and no referendum vote for the residents.

It was never about the safety of the project. The intention was to keep the project in a small group of people and go so deep in with the project that there was no way back. Somebody overheard that there was land bought and mentioned if you don’t soon tell your residents then I will go in the open with the information.

After the letters to the editor came in the newspapers and the yellow signs were popping up everywhere, the silencing and manipulations and accusations started.

It was never about safety – it was about power, control, silencing, intimidation, arrogance, exclusion, and promoting not informing.

What do we have to tell this “Nuclear Waste Marketing” Organization?” They know all the feedback that is out there. What a waste of time and resources and community spirit. A great job done by NWMO and council and staff, CLC and the business association for the big division in our community.

Rita Groen,

South Bruce
