Dear Editor,
How many South Bruce residents and neighbouring communities were in a state of disbelief on November 28, 2024, when they found out that NWMO (Nuclear Waste Management Organization) announced that the Township of Ignace and Wabigon Lake Ojibway Nation would be the site for the proposed DGR (deep geological repository)?
Probably everyone. With the big expression REALLY, how many thoughts were going through your head?
The NWMO has been in South Bruce for 12 years, promoting this project, giving money incentives, paying for full page newspaper adds, sponsoring/supporting many community events, etc., etc. South Bruce Council has been greatly involved and enjoying all the benefits of having them around. And this is the outcome!
BUT, the NWMO is not gone from South Bruce. The question is when will they or will they leave? How long will the “Learn more centre” and the employees remain on Teeswater’s main street? What is the plan for the South Bruce Nuclear Exploration Team employees working under the umbrella as municipal employees? And the big question, what is the NWMO planning to do with the 1154 acres of farmland they own? (the other acreage is only optioned) There are the NWMO’s two bore holes and water wells still present. No, the NWMO has not left South Bruce yet, so be prepared for more to come from the NWMO (and from Council). Again, more wait and see what will happen in South Bruce.
S.A. McDonald,
Culross/Teeswater
