To the editor,
Recently, in your paper, I read a reference to “the province’s clean nuclear energy sector” on one of the stories (Indigenous youth and women offered a free nuclear industry training program, June 17).
The last four words raised red flags for me. Clean nuclear energy sector? There is no such thing. Our community is having heated discussions about the creation of a deep geological repository (DGR) for radioactive waste within South Bruce. Energy that creates dangerous radioactive waste that does not disintegrate for thousands of years is not “clean” energy.
In many letters to the editor, newspaper articles and on social media, many supporters of the DGR have stated that opponents to the DGR are purposely spreading misinformation. However, misinformation seems to be widespread – even spread by our provincial government in official news releases and then later quoted by newspapers and others.
Given its creation of dangerous waste and other environmental impacts, there is no such thing as “clean nuclear energy” and the Government of Ontario, newspapers, and others should not refer to it as “clean” – especially in the community of South Bruce where the country’s radioactive waste from this “clean” energy source may be disposed of permanently.
