Dear Editor:
We want to express our sincere thanks to Peter Hammermueller and Jim and Linda Schurter for their letters opposing the use of ATV’s on the trail.
My husband and I have enjoyed hiking, jogging and cycling on the rail rail since its inception. How thrilling it was to not have to resort to sideroads and the shoulder of the highway anymore. No more traffic noise, exhaust emissions, or feeling unsafe.
The steady increase of like minded individuals on the trail has been wonderful. Unfortunately, the number of ATV’s and other motorized vehicles has also increased in spite of the ‘no motorized vehicles’ designation. Imagine how many ATV’s will be destroying the trail if allowed. None of our cycling friends will use our trail anymore as we inevitable encounter a motorized vehicle.
Our home is relatively close to the trail and it was nice to hear children laughing and having a good time outside on the trail. However, several Sundays ago my husband and I had to stop our conversation until the roaring of the ATV’s and dirt bikes receded down the trail – only to come past again the other way later on.
One of the many encounters with an ATV involved the driver having to wait behind me until I had reached a wider part of the trail so the driver could pass. After doing so, the driver paused to spin the back tires and shower me and my bike with stones then sped away. Whenever we encounter a motorized vehicle we stay single file so the driver can pass but they get dangerously close. Someone is going to get hurt.
The trail offers an outlet for exercise and staying in shape, physical therapy for those of us with balance and vertigo issues, and quiet contemplation. It may sound maudlin to some, but the trail is like a good friend – it’s always there when we need it.
Everyone who appreciates a quiet and safe place to walk, jog or cycle, please speak out and save the trail. Entreat the council to keep the trail non-motorized, as originally intended, in perpetuity.
