To the editor,
I had occasion to witness South Bruce council in action when I attended the Aug. 9 meeting at which the POW (Protect our Waterways) delegation made their presentation on the proposed DGR (deep geological repository). There are two words I would use to describe council members behaviour at that meeting: defensive and scared.
The last-minute rejection of David Wood’s candidacy is the latest example of this council being so far in debt to NWMO (Nuclear Waste Management Organization) that they will stoop to any lengths to ensure that their agenda to place a DGR in the community is realized. The democratic process and the will of the people be damned. It would appear that the clerk erred in not meeting the deadline for rejection so perhaps this appalling situation can be remedied. If not, one can only hope that this attempt at stifling opposition will backfire and encourage voters to be out en masse in October to vote this council out.
While we can only guess as to why the NWMO, after 10 years of grooming the community, have now delayed their decision for another year, there can be no doubt it is based on self interest and not what is best for the South Bruce community. The letter also raises a very important aspect to all of this. To quote S.A. McDonald’s letter from the Aug. 25 Herald-Times, “It is time people started taking a closer look at the complete studies and take a more active interest in what the NWMO and municipal council is doing.”
Yes, this will impact your quality of life as well! I have been doing my best here in West Grey to raise the level of awareness and interest and encourage all of you out there to get involved too.
