First Nations letter changes DGR outlook

Dear Editor,

South Bruce residents have yet to vote on whether or not to be a willing host to the Nuclear Waste Organization’s proposed deep geological repository (DGR). That vote will be made October 28.

It was to be made without knowing whether the NWMO has chosen South Bruce or Ignace as it’s preferred site. I would say that choice no longer exists.

In a Sept. 30 open letter to the NWMO 12 First Nations communities in and around Ignace rejected the proposal.

In a their letter signed by leaders of over a dozen First Nation they state;

“Our nations have not been consulted,we have not given our consent and we stand together in saying ‘no’ to the proposed nuclear waste storage site near Ignace and we call on you to respect our decision”

It would seem apparent that even though the Municipality of Ignace overwhelmingly voted to be host to the DGR, the NWMO has no other option but to choose South Bruce. That is unless they renege on their promise to respect the consent of local Indigenous people.

Further to that point, even if South Bruce votes full support in the referendum … Saugeen Ojibiway Nation still has the final say.
