Do you know what council is doing?

To the editor,

Interesting things continue to occur in the Municipality of South Bruce. Do you really know what your municipal council is doing?

A while back, South Bruce had a councillor resign (Audrey Bross), thus a replacement was needed. So, on March 21, following procedures, by the “luck of a draw” – literally, a name was pulled out of a dish – a new councillor was appointed. Lucky win!

Did you know that South Bruce is now a member of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities (CANHC)? Just what is that? It is an association that represents a broad cross-section of communities with a common interest as a host (or potential host) of nuclear technology in Canada, according to the CANHC website. Read up about it. Does this not sound like council is taking another deep step into that deep geological repository (DGR) hole to bring the burying of highly radioactive nuclear waste to South Bruce? Mayor Mark Goetz will be the community’s representative. Apparently, South Bruce could have joined earlier because of the Kinectrics business in South Bruce. You do know that Kinectrics is the laundry facility for Bruce Power’s personal protective equipment (PPE), thus a nuclear facility.

The NWMO has offered to send 12 people to Finland to view the Finnish DGR site… but who made the decision as to who will attend? Municipal council. Council even chooses who may attend from two groups – Willing to Listen and Protect Our Waterways – council invited to attend. The groups don’t get to choose their own representatives. All this is done in a “closed session.” Just what goes on in those “closed sessions?”

Recently in a letter to editor, it was mentioned that higher taxes would be paid if the NWMO’s DGR was not accepted. Will this DGR not require higher quality roads equating to more maintenance, etc., more sophisticated emergency equipment/services, maybe more highly paid municipal staff and on and on, all causing an increase in taxes. Are you reading and studying the complete reports? The reports don’t make it sound like taxes will be kept down.

There is a standing joke going about – if your organization/ group, etc. needs money, go to the NWMO so they can fund it. Think about it, does one get something for nothing? The NWMO is giving out money and promoting great ideas hoping South Bruce (and surrounding communities) will be a willing community, so they can bury their problem of highly radioactive nuclear waste, or as the NWMO call it – “spent nuclear fuel” – in a DGR.

Watch what you are asking for!
