‘Disappointed’ if Armoury sale goes through

To the editor,

Without a groundswell of outrage from the community, on April 12 the Municipality of Brockton will be accepting offers to purchase the Armoury.

In a sad commentary on the irreplaceable value of the military heritage of Bruce County and of our community, the municipality intends to dispose of this designated heritage building. This is not just Walkerton’s heritage, nor even restricted to Brockton, it is heritage rooted in the County of Bruce, for service in Canada and war-torn countries overseas. The local Militia assembled here. During the First Word War this building saw thousands of men signing up for the 160th Bruce Battalion and again during the Second World War for the 97th Battery. How many people with those deep military roots still live in our community?

I was surprised to discover Brockton actually does have a collection of memorabilia and history, but it’s locked at the fire hall or moulding in the basement of the library. This is the same municipality which is willing to enhance its online heritage by tagging veteran burials in the 28 municipal cemeteries, but not willing to place the heritage collection in a fitting location like the Armoury.

Take a look at the pictures on Brockton.ca under ‘Disposition of Land.’ This is not a decrepit, falling-down building. If council had the passion to save this building, the money would be found to complete the task of making it accessible.

I know I am not the only one who is disappointed if this sale goes through. I encourage every one of you to submit your comments to Fiona Hamilton at fhamilton@brockton.ca or by calling 519-881-2223 ext. 124.
