I was inspired by the passionate & informed citizens at the Fergus Sportsplex on Wednesday, October 28th. Maude Barlow and hundreds of others were there to shine a light on what Nestle is attempting to do with our water, a public resource currently destined for private profit. Nestle, one of the world’s largest and most influential multinationals, hopes to extract over a million litres a day from Middlebrook (across the road from Elora Gorge). Barlow made it clear that the strips the Harper government made to our environmental protection left us in a tenuous position. What I was excited to see in Fergus that night was an engaged citizenry encouraged to believe that it was “always too soon to give up”. Small, committed groups of concerned citizens, active in their advocacy for a better future have found themselves up against a giant obstacle in Nestle. Yes, it is that same Nestle convincing you to purchase “cheap” water bottles at Zehrs. Whose water is it anyways? Find out more at saveourwater.ca
