I recently attended a meeting to discuss an application by the Mann Group to extract gravel below the water table on 8th Line. The hydrogeologist employed by the proponent admitted there is no way to guarantee that contamination will not enter the water table as a result of this extraction. After Walkerton, how can we even consider jeopardizing the safety of our drinking water for the sake of a private company’s bottom line? It’s everyone’s water — our water — and we must protect it from narrow financial interests that would imperil its safety.
