Legion, Brockton to host New Year’s Levee

Dennis and the crew were in fine form again last weekend at the Legion’s Christmas Turkey ‘n Meat Draw. Some of those happy winners should have had a Brinks truck to take everything home!

We give our faithful volunteers a break for Christmas, so the next regular meat draw will be held in January.

Mark your calendars for Jan. 1 from 1-3 p.m. As in previous years, Branch 102 will be partnering with the Municipality of Brockton to host our combined New Year’s Levee. It’s your opportunity to mix and mingle, to say thank you and wish everyone the best for the upcoming year.

Municipal staff are working with us to create a spot on their website to show where veterans are buried in Brockton’s 26 cemeteries. You can see a similar project by searching ‘Brockton Heritage Storymap’ on the Brockton website. We have Walkerton Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery already done, and a tiny crew is presently working from home to locate others. It’s particularly challenging since most Second World War veterans do not have a military headstone. Leave a message at the branch if you can contribute locations of Greenock and Brant veteran burials.

People have been asking about the availability of our hall for small gatherings at Christmas time. With all the COVID protocols in place, you do the partying and leave the cleanup to us. For options and dates, call 519-881-0821. The Branch is open after 3 p.m. We rely heavily on our volunteers for these events and President Rose Austin thanks everyone who turned out to help prepare food and yes, clean up, after the latest event.

There’s another condolence card to be signed, another member has died. Branch 102 members and executive extend our collective sympathy to the family of Gord Wood, who passed way on the weekend. Gord was a resident at Brucelea Haven. It may have seemed like there was nothing flashy or unusual about Gord – he hadn’t even been to the branch for a long time – but Gord was a veteran, one of thousands from our area who protected, and served, our country. Lest we forget.
