HURON-KINLOSS – The Township of Huron-Kinloss is participating in the Municipal Innovation Council’s pilot project in partnership with Canadian company Food Cycle Science Corporation, which offers an innovative food composting solution in the form of FoodCycler units.
The partnership allows residents of Huron-Kinloss the opportunity to participate in an on-site food waste diversion solution that will reduce the amount of organic waste headed to the landfill.
Huron-Kinloss will be offering 130 FoodCycler units at a subsidized rate for residents. During the 12-week pilot period, participants will be expected to track the amount of food waste they have diverted to estimate the total impact of the pilot program. When complete, the unit is theirs to keep.
An alternative to composting, FoodCycler units are a counter-top system that reduces food waste at home. Using a specialized grinding system, it produces an odorless, nutrient-rich material that can be used as a fertilizer. The FoodCycler is capable of reducing food waste volume by up to 90 per cent including meat, bones, pits, and eggshells. This reduction will have a direct impact on the number of garbage bags heading to the landfill, resulting in personal cost savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Program participants will have the option of two unit sizes, depending on their needs. The original FoodCycler FC-30 is available at a cost of $150 plus HST and features a 2.5-litre bucket capacity, ideal for households of one to two people. The FoodCycler Maestro is available for $300 plus HST, with a five litre bucket capacity, recommended for households of three or more.
Residents interested in participating are encouraged to register online by April 2. Successful registrants will be sent a link from Food Cycle Science, where they will be able to purchase their unit at the discounted rate. Residents may choose to have the unit shipped to their home for $25 or free local pickup at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre at 17 Queen St., Ripley. Delivery of the units is scheduled for late April to early May.
