WALKERTON – Friday, Oct. 1, Hawks fans came to the Walkerton arena to see the team’s home opener. It wasn’t pretty for the home team, as Wingham trounced Walkerton 9-2.
The Ironmen are an experienced team with some good returning players, and it showed.
The Walkerton Hawks are a young team, but with plenty of potential. Fans saw some good passing and checking, although it will have to wait until another game for results to show on the scoreboard.
Wingham got took control early in the first period with a goal by Kyle Stanbury from Matt Tolton; Walkerton matched it five minutes later, Trevor Fischer from Evan Visser on the power play.
After that, Wingham controlled play for most of the remainder of the game, scoring eight more goals – Kyle Smeltzer from David Kozak and Dawson Fahrer, Stanbury from Jonah Burley and Fischer, Stanbury’s third from Nate Bloemberg, Hayden Robinson from Stanbury and Burley, Tolton from Stanbury and Fahrer, Bloemberg from Chris Adlys, Kozak from Jett Tokiwa and Jacob Rausen, and Tokiwa from Tolton and Adlys.
Walkerton scored once more in the third period, (Cole McIssac), but by then it was too late.
Saturday, Oct. 2 Walkerton travelled to Mount Forest. That game ended in a 7-0 shutout for Mount Forest.
Walkerton had a couple of good scoring opportunities but didn’t make it onto the scoreboard, while the Patriots capitalized on two of three power plays.
The Patriots came out strong and scored all the game’s goals in the first period – Jared Rowe from Matt McLellan and Riley Torrie on the power play, Kobe Roe from Calan Tanzi-Foshay and Derrick Cornfield, Aaron McGuirk from Cornfield and Mark Aljoe, Owen Goetz from McGuirk, Rowe from McLellan, Tanzi-Foshay from Cornfield and Aljoe on the power play, and Hayden Coulter from Aljoe and Cornfield.
On Wednesday, Oct. 6, Walkerton was at Mitchell for a mid-week match. The results of that game were not available at press time.
On Friday, Oct. 8, Goderich travels to Walkerton for an 8:20 p.m. game – come out and support the Hawks!
Under provincial health regulations, any adult entering the Walkerton arena must show proof of vaccination and a piece of photo identification, and provide name and phone number for contact tracing purposes.
On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Hawks head west on Highway 9 for a 2:30 p.m. game at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre against the Bulldogs.
