FORMOSA – A seniors apartment building in Formosa was a dream of the Formosa Lions Club in the mid-1980s.
In 1987, an ad hoc committee of Formosa Lions was formed and on July 15, 1988, final approval from the Ontario government for a 25-unit senior apartment complex was received. The first board of directors was formed, consisting of Chair Bill Borho, Secretary Mike Hallahan, Jim Becker, Harold Kuntz, Ed Brick, Norman Nuhn and Gert Weiler.
The site chosen was the property of Alf and Hilda Kuntz, who coincidentally were the parents of the new property manager, Joyce Brindley.
On Oct. 3, 1990 the official opening took place. The Y-shaped, 25-unit building, with its welcoming entrance and two common rooms, encourages tenants to gather for get-togethers. The beautiful large grounds and waterfall are a focal point, not only of Valley View but of the whole village displaying a larger-than-life nativity scene during the Christmas season.
The little extras in the building, such as the hair dressing shop, equipped kitchen, paneled doors, railed hallways, and a large carpentry and storage shed, were donated by the organizations in Formosa.
As you read this, Valley View Terrace tenants could be playing shuffleboard or cards, wandering and enjoying the beautiful grounds, enjoying a pot luck lunch or musical entertainment, or maybe just gathered for a coffee and visit in the common room.
In any event, they all wish you Happy Canada Day and good health and happiness.
