Hanover man faces firearms charges

HANOVER – What police are referring to as a neighbour dispute on the 600 block of 10th Avenue, Hanover, on May 26 ended with a 55-year-old man being charged with various weapons offences.

Police were called at 11:40 p.m. after a man was reported to have pointed a rifle at a neighbour and made threats of death and bodily harm, following an argument about parking of vehicles.

The Hanover officers who responded to the call were assisted by members of West Grey Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police. The man surrendered to police without incident. Police recovered a .22 calibre rifle at the scene. The next day, police executed a search warrant and seized a number of items including ammunition.

Police say further investigation resulted in the seizure of a handgun in Owen Sound that had been illegally transferred from the suspect to another person. Both the handgun and rifle were legally owned by the suspect.

Charges include using a firearm while committing an offence, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and uttering threats.

Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll commended the officers who responded “for their work in containing the scene and resolving this dynamic and dangerous incident that ended peacefully without anyone getting hurt.”
