FORMOSA – Feb. 9 saw President Jim Batte welcome the Formosa Lions, the Formosa Swans and their partners to the Formosa Hall for the Formosa Lions Valentine dinner meeting. With all the COVID protocols in place, a delicious meal of subs catered by TNT Formosa General Store. Homemade soup and Agnes Hallahan’s homemade pies rounded out this perfect Valentine supper. Lion Trish Borho of the Kincardine and Port Elgin Bulk Barn donated chocolate table favours. Thanks were extended to everyone who helped with the meal.
Tail Twister Lion Marianne Batte lead a game of “Family Feud” featuring four Valentine questions asked of 100 people. Eight teams competed, two for each question, resulting in four winning teams. Each member of the winning teams took home a bag of Valentine candies.
Lion Hank Soers and Lion Jennifer Batte attended to the secretary and treasurer duties. A note from Hanover Salvation Army was read thanking the Formosa Lions for their assistance with the Christmas Kettles. The Lions were once again invited to participate in the annual Lions photo competition. Eight-inch by 10-inch photos are to be brought to the March 9 meeting for the first round of judging, before forwarding the winning photo to the April District A9 Lions Convention.
Lion Shirley Kuntz thanked the ladies who assisted in spring cleaning the Formosa Library. The extra books will be donated to Wingham Habitat for Humanity. The encyclopedias will be donated to the Mennonite community.
Lion Carl Zettel reported on the progress of the plans for a revamped Recreation Centre. He thanked Nick Voisin, Jeff Fischer and Trevor Metcalfe for taking the lead on this community project. A grant from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization for $706,000 has been municipally approved, leaving $132,000 to be raised through donations and sponsorship. The Formosa Lions, Formosa Swans, Formosa Country Christmas and Britespan have all committed to making a generous donation. Sponsors are invited to help out with this much needed project. The timeline is as follows:
– April – demolition;
– May – new pad; and
– June – new building, just in time for Formosa Homecoming.
Lions Les Nichols reported that the Lions will once again host Farmers’ Night on March 9 at the Formosa Hall, with guest speaker Hugh Simpson. Simpson maintains bee hives across Grey, Bruce, Dufferin and Simcoe counties and operates Osprey Bluffs Honey Company. President Lion Jim thanked Lion Joan Borho for filling the executive nominations for the Lions’ April election. If COVID allows, the Lions Fabulous Feast will take the form of a drive-thru on April 24. Lion Frank Jacobi was presented with a membership pin for bringing in two new members. Lion Tim Borho, Formosa Homecoming Chair gave an update of the 2022 homecoming plans and reminded everyone to check out the Homecoming website and Facebook.
Lion Sandra Douglas made the February Lottery Draws with the following each winning $40: Karen Cronin – Elmira, Kevin and Michelle Inglis – Kincardine, and Vern and Anne Inglis, Harold Kuntz and Phillip Weber, all of Formosa.
