HANOVER – An update from Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll states that debris from last week’s devastating fire in downtown Hanover has been cleared.
Security fencing has been installed as demolition crews continue to work at the site. The downtown core has been completely reopened to traffic.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has concluded the on-site investigation and the Hanover Fire Department has cleared the scene.
Crews were called to the former Forum Hotel Rooming House on 10th Street in the early hours of Thursday, May 19.
The Hanover Fire Department entered the building to alert residents and assist with the evacuation. According to the press release, when officers entered the building, it was filled with heavy smoke, making the rescue and evacuation efforts difficult.
Fire crews from Hanover, West Grey, Walkerton and Elmwood also responded to the blaze.
Two Hanover police officers received treatment for smoke inhalation at the scene by Grey County paramedics.
Knoll confirmed in a press release that no human remains were found and there are no reports of missing persons. A number of pets, including dogs and cats, perished in the blaze.
The dollar value of the destroyed property has not yet been determined.
Everyone requiring housing has now been placed, and community partners continue to engage all residents displaced by the fire who need assistance.
The investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire continues. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Hanover Police Service at 519-364-4280 ext. 101 or they may make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
