GODERICH – The Elma Express U13 squad took part in the second annual Goderich Lions Tournament this past weekend in an eight team/two pool format.
The girls went a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, outscoring their opponents 41-19 beginning with a 10-5 victory over the Stratford Flames on Friday evening. Saturday morning saw the Express down the Londesborough Legends 14-3 as well, as the host Goderich Seahawks in a very tight 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon to round out pool play.
This was good enough for first place in their pool, pitting them against Waterdown on Sunday morning in the semifinals. The Express overcame a four-run deficit, completing the comeback in the final inning to defeat Waterdown 11-9, setting the stage for a repeat showdown in the championship against host Goderich on Sunday afternoon.
The girls battled some pitching staff injuries early on in the final but were able to overcome it in another low scoring 4-2 victory. Solid pitching, consistent hitting, and aggressive base running were the difference, allowing them to bring home the trophy.
