Driver charged with impaired on the beach

Huron County OPP charged a Huron East resident with Impaired Driving offences following complaints received by police on Aug. 20.

Huron County OPP was contacted by concerned citizens reporting that people were drinking alcohol on the beach at the end of Zion Road at approximately 4:50p.m. in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW) Township. Police attended the area of the report and observed a vehicle on the beach matching what was provided in the complaints.

Police spoke to the suspected driver and determined they had consumed alcohol before driving. Police demanded a sample of the driver’s breath into the roadside screening device, which failed. The driver was subsequently arrested for Impaired Operation and taken into custody. The driver was transported to the Huron OPP detachment in Clinton for further breath tests with an OPP-qualified breath technician.

A 49-year-old male from Huron East has been charged with Operation While Impaired – alcohol and drugs and Operation while Impaired – Over 80.

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. The accused’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days.

The accused has since been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich.
