Having been a father for a few years, Christmas in present times more resembles what it was like for me as a lad so many decades ago. I’m now starting to see the similarities through the eyes of my tykes, and it brings on a great deal of nostalgia.

The importance of soulfulness
Our thoughts this week have come from some reading I have been doing reflecting on the importance of caring for our souls, a great challenge for me as I follow Jesus. As I talk to others on my travels this seems to be a common concern.
Media’s missed moment
I can’t be the only one who watches more TV during this time of year. My excuse for this rather lazy habit is typically the weather. I often tell myself, “It’s too cold and stormy to go out.” Then I plop myself into my spot on the couch and remain there for the rest of the night. Sometimes sleeping
Calculating the incalcuable – Part I
Harvest 2021 has been painful. Soybeans were interrupted by rain. The dream of an early planted wheat crop vanished, stolen by untimely rains. Many farmers are like us with just ‘one more day’ of corn left out there waiting to be picked.
Legion, Brockton to host New Year’s Levee
Dennis and the crew were in fine form again last weekend at the Legion’s Christmas Turkey ‘n Meat Draw. Some of those happy winners should have had a Brinks truck to take everything home!
Every day is the best day, if we so choose
“This is the best day ever!” proclaimed my three-year-old, raising his arms to the ceiling of our hotel room with an enthusiasm I couldn’t replicate if I tried. He had just received his second emergency blood transfusion.
It’s all in the presentation
I am a fan of the press. Sure, I may not see eye to eye with some members of the press, or specific publications, but I believe that the press has a duty to inform the public about the happenings of their local councils and governments, police and fire, and tell human interest stories.
Words that can shape one’s life
Friends. I’ve been thinking a great deal lately about language. Words, actually. I am particularly fond of how words sound. Sometimes I find myself lost in listening to others, who are speaking words from languages I could only ever dream of knowing, wondering what it is they are expressing.
It’s the ‘Big Gobbler Weekend’
One of our most popular meat draws – the turkey draws – will be held this Saturday, with doors opening at 2:30 p.m.
Saugeen Municipal Airport supports economic development
The airport commission actively supports economic development within Brockton, Hanover and West Grey, and often recommends visiting pilots and their families shop in local stores.
A day which continues to live in infamy
As you’ve probably noted through past commentaries here on page four, I’m fascinated with the concept of historical irony. Eighty years ago this week one of the best examples of this in modern history came to pass at an American naval base in Hawaii, which at the time was likely unknown to most outs
A new voyage is born, but doesn’t replace ‘My Voyage with Dementia’
The new voyage is a very nasty one – a voyage that I would not wish on anyone. This new voyage is a autoimmune disorder of major proportions called dermatomyositis, or DM for short.
A message from Walkerton Legion President Rose Austin
Once again, we’ve had a successful Poppy Campaign, thanks to donations from businesses and individuals and to those who took part in tagging. Our appreciation goes out to the businesses who accepted poppy boxes or decorated their store windows for remembrance, and to Maple Court for the beautiful fi
‘Love your neighbour as yourself’
If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple – Luke 14:26
A week of mixed emotions
Last week was one of mixed emotions for this reporter.
