Bruce County to give drivers more time to slow down

BRUCE COUNTY – Don’t be surprised if you see more speed limit signs appearing on Bruce County roads.

The county intends to create additional speed reduction zones in areas where current speed limit reductions are 30 km/h or more – for example, 80 km/h to 50 km/h.

A report presented to the county’s transportation and environmental services committee stated it’s a best practice to not reduce speeds by more than 20 km/h. This gives drivers more time to reduce their speed with less braking. A minimum length of 1,000 metres is recommended for speed zones at a posted speed limit of 70 km/h or higher, and a 500-metre speed zone for 50 km/h to less than 70 km/h.

The report stated the county currently has 29 speed reduction areas that don’t meet the standard best practice. The county plans to lengthen the transition zone with the addition of a 10 km/h reduction zone where the original reduction in speed is 30 km/h.

The transition zone project will begin with Paisley and Wiarton roads, with Lucknow and Walkerton to follow in 2022.
