Aaron’s faith was deeply important to him, and he never tired of talking about the things of God. A casual conversation could quickly turn into a theological discussion, and he valued hearing what others saw in a passage of Scripture and hearing their perspective. He was always eager to share something he had read in the Bible that day and what God had been showing and teaching him through it. His faith was something he thought about, talked about, wrestled with, and continued to grow in throughout his life. Aaron knew we live in a broken world and that none of us makes it through life untouched by sorrow, disappointment, and shortcomings. But he also knew something greater, that the grace of God is sufficient, His mercy is new every morning, and our hope rests not in a perfect life, but in a perfect and faithful Savior. Any visitors to the family home were soon regaled with stories of misadventures, near disasters, and how God so miraculously delivered him time and time again from many a serious situation (often those of his own making). After sharing stories of a tractor accident, a head on collision, or other escapades, he’d often point to the sign above his lazy boy chair which read, “Please be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet.” You never quite knew whether a visit with Aaron would lead to a theological discussion or a good laugh. More often than not, it was both. Visitors often left a little more inspired, a little more thoughtful, and with a smile on their face. Aaron served in different areas in church life, as a Sunday School teacher, school board member, and devotional leader at church and in the school. Aaron loved working with his hands, and was quick to find solutions to problems, building redneck contraptions to fix what ever needed fixing, and learning new skills. His curiosity about how things worked made him very resourceful, a trait he passed along to his children. He loved learning and was thrilled to be able to speak fluently in Low German, High German, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. He had a quick and quirky sense of humour and family get togethers soon became loud gatherings with laughter and family jesting. Aaron worked at the sawmill in Houston, BC for many years. His work life also took him into the halls of a high school, where he worked as a custodian. Later, he purchased a cleaning business and took on the job of keeping the local mall spic and span. Then, in 1989, at an age when many people might have started thinking about slowing down, he decided instead to follow a dream. He and Helen purchased an egg layer farm near Exeter, Ontario, where he happily traded cleaning supplies for chickens and farm life. He continued farming until 2011, when he finally hung up his farmer’s hat and he and Helen moved to Listowel.
