Dear Editor:
Thanks for the reporting on the chinwag regarding the Saugeen Municipal Airport and the personal letter from one of the municipal councillors from Brockton.
The clear effort by the author of the letter to bend facts is somewhat troubling.
Presume that the combined population of the three municipalities is more or less 30,000. If one divides that into the purported combined $120,000, then each citizen contributes $4 per year to keep the aerodrome operating. This is $0.33 per month. Hardly a burden for most.
Conversly, in an earlier reported conversation at a Brockton council meeting, the cost to Brockton annually is more or less $15,000 “net of rebates.” On a monthly basis using the population of Brockton of more or less 15,000 is $1 per citizen or $0.083 per month. That seems a modest contribution especially if the other two partner municipalities contribute the remaining $105,000.
Somewhat confusing and lacking credibility.
And to say that selling this asset would serve the community better in the hands of those sniffing around a huge windfall, should be alarming. And to read further this asset as an aerodrome, would be operated better in the private sector is at best wishful thinking. What then followed is the claim that if sold, the councils would be left to do what they do best…OMG. Imagine what these councils might do with a net of $40,000.
To then go on by saying that this site would serve well those requiring affordable housing, suggests a lack of appreciation and understanding the real needs of these citizens. Arrogance may be too strong a word but…
Additionally, it was clear to many in Brockton that the local council, in a seemingly clandestine way, already had the aerodrome in their sights for residential development. It is apparent that this council has an unsatiable need to overwhelm our community with growth.
