Teije “Ted” Spoelstra of Listowel passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 7, 2024, in his 80th year.
Husband of the late Audrey (Hartung) Spoelstra who predeceased him in 2023. Father of Steven & Bethany Spoelstra of Guelph, and Nancy Spoelstra & Peter North of Grimsby, and grandfather of Abigail, Frederick and Connor.
Brother of Harry & Bev Spoelstra of Listowel, and Tina & Ken Jones of Georgetown, and brother-in-law of Marlene & John Mueller of Gads Hill, and Leola Hartung of Gowanstown. Remembered by his nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Henry & Winnie (de Haan) Spoelstra, and brother-in-law Don Hartung.
Born in Holland in 1944, Ted came to Canada in 1949 with his family, settling initially in Moorefield and making his way eventually to Listowel. He married Audrey in 1973, and the two of them settled into life in Listowel, eventually welcoming Steven and Nancy to complete the family.
A hard worker, Ted spent many years working for Spinrite before taking early retirement due to some health issues in 2003. Known for his colourful personality and unique sense of style, Ted became a community fixture on his frequent walks around town. He loved his family fiercely; loving a cup of coffee only slightly less. He will be missed greatly by his family.
Much thanks to Dr. Gateman, the team on the first floor at Listowel Memorial Hospital and the team at Hospice Wellington for their care of Ted in his last days.
Visitation was held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral service was at Listowel Salvation Army Citadel on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The service was livestreamed and the link is available on the funeral home website.
Interment in Zion United Church Cemetery, Wallace Township.
