Goderich mayor passes away

GODERICH – Mayor Myles Murdock has passed away.

The news broke on Friday morning, with the Town of Goderich issuing a statement.

“On behalf of Goderich town council and staff, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of our mayor, Myles Murdock,” reads the statement signed by Deputy Mayor Trevor Bazinet.
“Myles served the residents of Goderich with dedication, commitment, and leadership. Myles had a passion for many different issues and initiatives, with a keen interest in environmental stewardship, health care, housing, and economic development.”

No cause of death has been officially stated, but it has been reported that Murdock was diagnosed with cancer in January.

Murdock served two terms as councillor (2006-10, 2014-18) and one term as deputy mayor (2018-22). The last three months of his term as deputy mayor saw him assume the acting mayor role following the tragic passing of Mayor John Grace on Aug. 9, 2022.

Murdock was elected mayor on Oct. 24, 2022, winning the election with 55.2 per cent of the vote over Matt Hoy, who received 44.8 per cent of the vote.

“We mourn his loss and the guidance, leadership and experience that he provided,” added Bazinet. “He was a colleague and friend to many.

“Our thoughts go out to Cathy, Alecia, Mike and children, his family, and his loved ones.”

Flags at Town of Goderich facilities will be lowered in honour of Murdock.

Bazinet has assumed the role of acting mayor.
