Driver stopped for speeding, leaves with impaired charge

MORRIS-TURNBERY – A South Huron resident was stopped by police earlier this month for speeding, but left with an impaired driving charge.

Huron County OPP, in a July 20 release, say an officer was patrolling on London Road in Morris-Turnberry on July 2 around 7:15 p.m. when they observed a vehicle travelling “much higher than the posted speed limit.”

“In speaking to the driver, the investigating officer determined that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to driving and was subsequently required to provide a roadside breath sample into an approved screening device, which resulted in a failure,” states the release.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Clinton OPP detachment to provide breath tests before a qualified intoxilyzer technician. Police say “suitable breath samples were provided… which resulted in readings over twice the legal limit.”

The accused, a 41-year-old from South Huron, has been charged with operation while impaired – over 80.

The accused was additionally charged with an offence found in the Highway Traffic Act.

The involved vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, and the accused’ driver’s license was suspended for a period of 90 days.

The driver has since been released from custody, with a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 14 in Goderich.
