HANOVER – Eight Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board (BGCDSB) students from Sacred Heart High School represented the board at the 2023 Skills Ontario Competition, held on May 1-3 at the Toronto Congress Centre.
This year marked a return to an in-person event after three years of being held virtually. BGCDSB competitors won medals in three categories: one silver and two bronze.
The event promotes skilled trades and technology careers to youth, by hosting skilled trades competitions across Ontario, in several contest areas. Participating students showcased their talents and competed for the title of best in their trade amongst the province’s most skilled youth. Students from Notre Dame Catholic School and Sacred Heart High School also attended the Skills Ontario Young Women’s Conference, which happens in conjunction with the competition.
This provided an opportunity for young women to participate in activities related to the skill trades and view the competing students demonstrate various skills related to their specific categories.
Medals were awarded to:
– Parker Elphick – silver in welding;
– Mitchell Hackett – bronze in CNC woodworking; and
– Jacob Girdler – bronze in cabinet making.
Honourable mentions were awarded to:
– Emma Stade in automotive;
– Oliver Aeberhardt and Phil Adonioan in carpentry – team of two;
– Tori Hopcraft in computer-aided manufacturing; and
– Ethan Dietz in precision machining.
The students were supported by coaches Dave Metcalfe, Dave Allison and Mike McCormick, technological education teachers at Sacred Heart High School.
Participation in the Skills Ontario Competition is made possible through the support of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, as well as sponsorship from Bruce Power.
