Strolling down Memory Lane with the Walkerton Horticultural Society: Part 2

This is the second in a series of articles from the early 2000s about Walkerton Horticultural Society activities. These articles will be published several times over the next few months in loving memory of longstanding society president, Nancy Bajurny who was always dedicated to beautifying our town.

“The Walkerton Horticultural Society has worked extra hard this year (2000) to keep the spirit of the community in a positive and colourful mode. We are widely noted for our splendid flowerbeds, beautiful planters and hanging baskets and the great team of volunteers help out.

“There will be a Plant Exchange on Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at the Walkerton Farmers Market. What a great way to celebrate the arrival of autumn. I know; where did summer go? And really, I think this is a summer we all want to put aside and think and talk of more pleasant and happy times. Plants will be available for sale with free draws every hour on the hour. The community’s brightest gardeners will be on hand to answer any gardening questions you may have and share their garden tips. This may be your last chance to acquire that special millennium plant that will be a reminder of the trials and tribulations overcome in the year 2000.

“The guest speaker for the October meeting was Gwyn Brundrett from Baden on the topic of ‘Lilies.’ Gwyn is a master gardener and has been a member of the Lily Society for 15 years. She has over 1,000 different lilies in her garden and gave a beautiful lily bulb to everyone in attendance. She has developed a number of lilies; her latest will be called ‘Thrasher’ after the brown thrasher birds that are speckled like her new lily. The others are named after her children, Nadine, Mark, Lawrence and Calvin.

“Everyone is encouraging all gardeners to plant yellow daffodils this fall with the hopes their yellow blooms next spring will be a sign of a bright future within our community and a reminder never to take for granted the resources and gifts our planet has provided us.

“The Walkerton Horticultural Society had a great turnout for their 2000 annual general meeting and potluck dinner.

“The Bel Canto Singers were the guests for the evening. Their selection of music and song was a beautiful introduction for the dinner meeting and a great way to prepare everyone for the upcoming festive season.

“The membership would like to say ‘Thank you’ to Frankie Nickel who has been our president for this past year. We welcome Nancy Bajurny as the president for next year.”
