FORMOSA – Two sisters from the village of Formosa recently medalled at their respective indoor track and field championships.
Billie Martin, 21, won the gold medal in the 20-pound women’s weight throw at the NCAA Division I Big East Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 24. Billie is in her junior year at DePaul University in Chicago, where she is studying physical education.
Her top throw was 19.71 metres in the sixth round of the event, not only good enough to win gold but also set a new personal best.
Billie’s focus shifts now to the upcoming outdoor track and field season, where she competes in the women’s 4kg hammer throw. Her first meet is later this month in Orlando, Florida.
Billie’s younger sister, Harley, 18, also had a medal-winning weekend, claiming bronze in the 20-pound women’s weight through at the Ontario University Athletics Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 25. Harley is in her first year at the University of Windsor, where she is studying human kinetics.
Harley’s bronze-medal throw of 14.93 metres was a new personal best.
Harley has also qualified for the upcoming USports Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the University of Saskatoon from March 9-11.
The Martin sisters will return home to Formosa for the summer, where they will compete for the Saugeen Track and Field Club in the 4kg hammer throw, and have their sights set on the 2023 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, B.C. in July.
