Bruce County Museum plans special presentation for Black History Month

BRUCE COUNTY – Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre is gearing up for a Black History Month presentation on Feb. 4, 2-4 p.m.

Erasing Erasure will be presented by local historian Aly Boltman, and Dorothy Abbott of the Grey County Black Heritage Society. They’ll be speaking on the work that led to the recognition of more than 1,200 people, some from Bruce County, who were buried in unmarked graves in Owen Sound’s Potter’s Field.

Many of those people were fleeing slavery in the United States when they arrived in Owen Sound, the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad.

The Potter’s Field project has won five awards, most recently, an Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Heritage Award.

The event will be held in the museum’s Bruce Power Theatre for those attending in person, and will be livestreamed on Facebook for those attending virtually. Members may attend free of charge; general admission applies.
