NORTH PERTH – Police are reminding residents of the dangers of engaging in online chats following an incident in North Perth that saw a local man become the victim of extortion.
On Nov. 29 around 6:20 a.m., Perth County OPP were called to a North Perth address to investigate an extortion incident.
Police say it was determined that a man met a woman using a cellphone app. During their conversation, the man sent the woman an explicit photo. According to police, the woman demanded the man pay an undisclosed sum of money “in order for the photograph not to be distributed to all of the victim’s friends and family.”
Perth County OPP are warning all social media users to be aware.
“We live in a connected world where it’s easy to feel as if our far-away friends are right next door. Having a face-to-face conversation with someone is gaining in popularity and everyone needs to be vigilant when engaging in any online chats,” states an OPP press release.
“Once it’s out there, you can’t get it back.”
