The Huron Perth District held its ROSE program at the Listowel Agricultural Hall on Nov. 3 with 90 ladies in attendance.
This was the first Ladies Day Out since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Featured was The Raw Carrot serving a soup and sandwich meal, as Nov. 3 was “Soup Day.”
Following lunch, Barb Elg introduced Sonja Van de Hoef-Fraser, a minister at the Milverton United Church, who entertained with songs from the war years ahead of Remembrance Day.
Can one bowl of soup change the world? Janice Benson from The Raw Carrot in Mount Forest spoke on the organization which began in Paris, Ont. in 2014 and in Mount Forest in 2017, as a way to provide meaningful employment and livelihood security to individuals on ODSP who need a hand up, not out. They have six employees and a lot of their volunteers are seniors who cook one day a week. Several varieties of soup are available to be purchased at local businesses throughout the area.
Darlene Harding, ROSE coordinator for Huron Perth District, had a DIY craft demonstration on how to make bowl cozies and beeswax wraps which can be used any way that plastic wrap is. Beeswax wraps have many benefits: they keep foods fresh longer, save money, easy to use and care for, and are also biodegradable, antibacterial and freezer friendly.
