Brockton National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event organizers thank community

To the editor,

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who made this year’s event to acknowledge the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation possible.

We sincerely appreciate Band Councillors Bev Nadjiwan and Miptoon from Neyaashiinigmiing (Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation) for sharing their moving words and offering great meaning to our gathering.

We also appreciate the financial support received from the Municipality of Brockton and the Walkerton and District Optimist Club which made this event possible. Thank you to A&R Music, His Style, the Municipality of Brockton, and Bruce County Public Library – Walkerton Branch for acting as pick-up locations for the orange awareness lapel ribbons.

Thank you to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board and the N’we Jinan program for allowing us to play the song ‘Tie Our Spirits’, written and performed by Ojibwe students of St. Joseph’s School, Port Elgin, which shared a powerful and hopeful message.

And finally our thanks to all participants for attending and participating in this important event. Coming together as a community on this day demonstrated that we are willing to move forward as a community in reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. By providing space for listening and reflection, we can truly begin this journey. Thank you for joining us to learn, listen, and reflect.

Next steps: We are a group of people who are committed to truth and reconciliation and are looking forward to planning other events and education opportunities beyond Sept. 30 and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Regardless of where you feel you are on the journey to reconciliation, we welcome anyone to join our efforts. Thank you,
