NORTH PERTH – The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning the public to think about sending intimate videos or images to strangers on the other side of the screen.
This reminder comes as a result of a recent ‘sextortion’ case involving a 13-year-old youth from North Perth that has been victimized. In this case, the victim met someone on a popular social media app.
The victim shared intimate photos, at which time, the suspect began to threaten the victim that the images would be shared to friends, schoolmates and teachers if she did not send more intimate photos.
Sextortion is where people engage in sexually-explicit conversations or video chats, and one of the people involved threatens the other that they will share the sexually-explicit videos or images with the other parties’ family and friends unless they receive money, more material, or engage in sexual acts.
If you are a victim of a sextortion scam, call police at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501.
