WALKERTON – The Walkerton & District Food Bank recently held its Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.
Dorothy Frook, chair of the board, recognized the volunteers (above) who had been with the Food Bank, some since its beginning in 1991.
Matt Schute, director of community and employment services for the Y, spoke on Bruce County’s rural homelessness response.
Eighty per cent of homeless are temporary, requiring a few days emergency housing for a once-in-a lifetime event such as a fire at their home. Ten per cent may have occasional need for repeated assistance with housing. He described the situation for the other 10 per cent who are chronically homeless for more than a year at a time – no meds, no identification, no job and who need a place to sleep tonight, before they can start solving their other issues.
If you see someone who appears to need help, please call 211. Homelessness often results when incomes don’t match housing and other costs, and this is reflected in the increasing number of clients using our local food bank.
