Students at Walkerton District Community School (WDCS) noticed that, as a school, they generate a large amount of plastic waste from the packaging in their lunches. As a way to help save the plastic from ending up in landfills, ecosystems, and waterways, students in Mrs. Dietze’s environmental club have been making ecobricks. Ecobricks can be used to make chairs, tables, gardens, and more. Each day, plastic would be collected, sorted, cut, and stuffed into water bottles. Students were able to make this chair, saving 4751g (about 10 lbs) of plastic from ending up in landfills. This chair is functional and can be sat on by both staff and students at WDCS. When sitting on the chair, students are encouraged to reflect on their use of plastic and the impact this has on the environment.
