The following is a letter addressed to North Huron council from the Blyth Festival Theatre dated June 15, 2022, and is reprinted here with permission.
Dear members of township council,
On behalf of the Blyth Centre for the Arts, and all of the artists, technicians, volunteers, and staff that comprise our community, please accept this letter in acknowledgement, respect, and gratitude for your openness to revisiting the township flag policy over the last year, and the decision to embrace a little rainbow coloured change.
We know council is faced with many requests, and has to undertake many decisions in a year, but we especially celebrate your willingness in this instance, to listen to the young people in this community, our previous youth, and to take their message to hear, by embracing the flying of the Pride flag this month.
This act of solidarity and respect represents the best of what we can be as a community: a place of acceptance where we love our neighbours, welcome strangers, and treat each other as we would be treated. Providing visibility and acknowledgment of the value of the contributions of the LGBTQ2S+ population in our community is an important step forward in continuing to strive to be a welcoming township in which to live, work, love and play.
The Blyth Festival applauds North Huron council and all township staff.
